Staff Sgt. Marshall H. Caddy 27, of Nags Head, N.C.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Greaves, Korea; killed Nov. 16 when his military vehicle struck another military vehicle in Khaladiyah, Iraq.∼Eight years ago, Marshall Hugh Caddy was living the life of a beach bum _ surfing, working odd jobs and hanging out with friends. But he wanted more. "He said, 'Mom, there's nothing here that I'm ever going to make a career out of, and I see too many people who aren't going anywhere,'" said his mother, Sheila Williamson. "He came home, cut his hair and joined the Army." A native of Nags Head, in coastal North Carolina, Caddy - who went by the name Hugh - enlisted for four years, then another six. Caddy, 27, died Nov. 16 when the Humvee he was traveling in was struck by a tank. He had been based at Fort Hood, Texas. He is also survived by his father, Marshall E. Caddy, and his stepmother, Lisa Caddy. Williamson said her son believed that he had made a difference in Iraq. "He believed in what he was doing," she said. "He did not have any reservations. He was trying to do what he was trained to do, as he kept telling me."
