Many of you will remember Sunny Huber, an 89er who attended WA for many years. On May 17th, in a dark moment of self-destruction, Sunny lost a battle to the bipolar disorder that tormented her for many terrible years.
There is no pleasant way to speak of her death except to say that in 2014, reasonable, decent people do not stigmatize mental illness any more than they would accuse eye-glass wearers of some sort of moral failing.
Sunny was so damn brilliant, effortlessly. Many years before Steven Covey popularized the phrase “thinking outside the box”, Sunny and I instantly-in-a-glance-without-a-word recognized each other as kindred spirits and as rascally thinkers whose brain-boxes never came with a top in the first place. She had this fantastic, irreverent, knowing smile which hinted of her gift for transforming important, yet seemingly unconnected ideas into art.
Perhaps because she herself walked dark paths, Sunny was compassionate. She loved animals. Sunny instinctively and un-apologetically felt tenderness for the poor, the disenfranchised, the outcasts, those who suffered. Her unfiltered heart was just a small fraction of what made her beautiful to me.

Sunny’s senior quote is Nietzsche: “In order to give birth to a dancing star, you must have chaos within yourself.”
Shine on Sunny, dancing star. We love you and miss you.
