Edwin Francis White, "Ed" to his many friends, was the son of Edward M. White (1859-1922) and Margaret McDonald (1867-1890). He married Ruth Esther Grunewald on February 20, 1917, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. After Ruth's death in 1924 from appendicitis, Ed moved to California with his two young children, James Paul White (1920-1986) and my mother Margaret Kathleen White. (1922-2018). There he married Mary May Brisbine on February 27, 1932 and the family lived on a small ranch in the Cienega Hills south of Hollister. Neighbors would often stop by in the hot summer months to sample his home-made beer. My mother recalled rootbeer for the kids too. Some years later the family moved into town where Ed went to work for the city of Hollister.
I remember well his great BBQ chicken dinners, cooked on a 50 gallon oil drum in his back yard, and to this day we use his special recipe. He was a gentle, soft-spoken, yet outgoing man, who was a good friend to many folks in Hollister.
