Sylvinia Fox was born on November 20th, 1837 in Freehold Township, Pennsylvania. Her parents were; father William M. Fox hailing from the 'Fox Family' of Charlotte, New York and mother Betsey Jaquay of the 'Jaquay Family' of Quonochontaug, Rhode Island. She was raised in Freehold, the daughter of a lumberjack and was also one of seven children. Sylvinia had 3 brothers; Zachary, Sylvester, and David, as well as 3 sisters; Martha Annis, Adelia, and Savannah. She was the eldest child and more than likely helped her mother take care of her six younger siblings. Her father passed away at the young age of 40 when Sylvinia was only 15, quite possibly in a logging related mishap (as it was famously one of the most deadliest occupations of the time). Unfortunately, no death certificate has been located to support this. The early death of William Fox left his widow with seven young children that needed caring for and this may be why Sylvinia did not wed until the age of 27 (which seemed much later than most for the time).
Sylvinia married the widowed Lafayette Crowell in early 1864 in Villenova, New York. One can only speculate that she had been visiting relatives in Charlotte at some point that had brought her to Villenova as the two towns are both located in Chautauqua County. I feel compelled to note that there are 'internet whispers' that Sylvinia was the Crowell housekeeper before Lafayettes' first wife passed away, however I could find no supporting evidence of this. Sylvinia settled in with Lafayette and his three young children in Villenova, and having helped looked after her six siblings, raising step-children probably came naturally to her. The two went on to have five children of their own over the next 16 years. Those children were: Merton, Marcus Edgar, George Grant, Emerson Otis, and her only daughter Glennie.
Not much is known about her through the following years and we are left to speculate that she is kept busy raising a full house of eight children. I can't help but note that all 8 of the children she brought up lived well into their 70's and 80's (I believe one or two may have been older than 90). During times that weren't always easy, diseases spread like wildfire, health care was minimal, money was tight, people worked hard, and on top of all of the other factors of just everyday life....she must have been a wonderful mother!
Her husband Lafayette passed away in 1898, and we find her living with her niece and nephew in Villenova on the 1900 census. They are Andrew and Anna Edick and I can't quite place them in the family. It would make sense that she is not living alone though as she is 61 and her youngest child Emerson is now 20 and more than likely has moved out of the house.

Her son-in-law Byron Crowell (husband of Glennie) signed the certificate as the notified/informed family member. Byron and Glennie were residents of Concord, Erie County, PA at that particular time. She is forever laid to rest now beside her late husband Lafayette at Ball Hill Cemetery in Forestville, NY.
