Missionaries of La Salette

TONER, Reverend John G., M.S. Reverend John G. Toner M.S., 90, of The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, 75 New Park Avenue, Hartford, died Friday, (July 30, 2004)at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. He was born in New Brittain, July 12, 1914, son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Cusack) Toner. He attended schools in New Britain, before moving with his family to New Brunswick, NJ where he attended high school. He considered working for the circus until the Lord intervened and led him to La Salette. he made his first profession of vows July 2, 1939, at La Salette Novitiate, Bloomfield and then continued his studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Altamont, NY. he was ordained a priest June 3, 1944, at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Albany, NY by the Most Rev. Edmund F. Gibbons, Bishop of Albany. For 14 years he was actively engaged in the ministry of formation in the La Salette seminaries of Hartford, CT, altamont, NY and Ipswich, MA and he taught classical languages and theology. In Altamont and Ipswich he was also Director of Students. After years behind a desk he took to the road in 1958 as Vocation Director and Director of Development for the Missions of Burma and Argentina. In 1983 he saw a lifelong dream come true. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops appointed him to serve as chaplain to the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and he was called to travel about the country ministering to his circus family. He retired to La Salette House, Hartford but he continued to maintain contact with his circus associates and friends. Besides his La Salette family, he is survived by a nephew, Michael W. Toner of Mystic; and numerous friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated August 2, 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 79 New Park Avenue, Hartford. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, August 1, 2-5 p.m. at La Salette Hartford House, 85 New Park Avenue, Hartford. contributions in his memory may be made to : Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette Retirement Fund, 915 maple Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114-2330. The Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
