Mr. Staats spent 23 years in the Air Force and made Peoria his home after he retired at Luke Air Force Base in 1985. United States Air Force Retired Roger was beaten to death while out riding his bicycle. He was courageous enough to intervene in a domestic violence altercation along a street when he stopped to help a young girl. He was 65. His son, 30-year-old Staff Sgt. David Staats of Glendale, was among three soldiers who died after a roadside bombing attack north of Baghdad.
