Funeral services for Gary Lee Provence, 69, of Palestine, Texas will be at 10AM Tuesday at the Church of the Nations with Rev. Doug Herrell officiating. Graveside services with full military honors will be at 3 P.M. at the Dallas - Ft. Worth National Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory.

Mr. Provence died Thursday at home in Palestine. He was born September 21, 1935 in Olton, Texas to Thomas and Willamae Kirby Provence. He was raised in Texas and after 10 years in the service in the U.S. Navy worked as a civilian nuclear weapons inspector. Mr. Provence was a county sheriff in California and also a fire captain. He returned to Texas after retiring in 1989.

Mr. Provence was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Provence in September 2003. Survivors include 2 sons, Mark and Jamie Provence of California; daughter Pamela Witherspoon of California; 2 sisters Retha Crowther and Beverly McWhorter, both of Texas; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mark Provence, Mark Witherspoon, Eric Witherspoon, Bryan Taylor, Loren Taylor, and Lynn Crowther.

The family will receive condolences from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society.
