Edna Elizabeth Black had gone away to be a nun and was a nun until she was about 25 years old when she found to have an enlarged heart. Rather than be assigned to sedentary duties that would not put a strain on her heart, Edna decided to return home at that time, where she met and married Ray McColloch. She and Ray adopted their first son, and then Edna almost died of renal failure when she gave birth to Thomas. Thomas was five months younger than his adopted brother Robert. She and Ray had 10 grandchildren when she died in 1961 and 14 grandchildren at the time of Ray's death in 1964. She was a member of the St. Vincent Roman Catholic Church in Akron. Edna was Godmother to Grace Edna Rogers. Edna lived in Huntsville at the time of her death. She died at Jane Case Hospital in Delaware, Ohio
Her daughter shares this memory of her mother and relatives."There was a relative of Mother's who came to visit once or twice from Pittsburgh. On one occasion they arrived in the dead of night and threw pebbles at all the bedroom windows trying to wake us up. It finally worked and we all got up at 2 or 3 AM and Mom was putting food out and making coffee and everyone was hooting and laughing. That whole boisterous scene comes back to me now, but I can't tell you who it was, if it was this Lil and who she was. (The only relatives from Pittsburgh turn out to be Edna’s cousin Lizzy and her mother). I do know that I was impressed with the whole scene because it was totally unlike my normal life or my quiet mother. The only times she was ever animated were when relatives came, especially Aunt Belle.”
Virginia also shares this story about her mother's doll that may be the same doll seen in the picture of her at about age 3. When Edna gave the doll to her daughter, the doll did not have hair, but a wig. The wig had been made from Cretora Best's hair, Cretora having died at age 14.
