Bonnie Jean Kelems was born to Jesse Kelems and Bertha Malone Kelems on July 4, 1936. Bonnie was actually born in a community called Hackberry near Caraway. She was delivered by a retired nurse by the name of Miss Denton. Bonnie, my mom, was one of 8 children: Jesse Alene(Wahlstrom), Lillie Helen(Dixon), Bonnie Jean(Shortnacy), Juanita Anetta(Weathers), Jesse Lee Jr, Marcella Jo(Young), James Billy, and Jimmy Bruce. She married Leroy Willam Shortnacy on October 7, 1950 and they had five children: Glenda Jean Shortnacy Fite, Kathy LaDonna Shortnacy Todd, Timothy Leroy Shortnacy, Michael William Shortnacy, and Reuben Paul Shortnacy.
My mom was the absolute best mom in the world. She lived for her family and her children ALWAYS came first. I know for sure that my mom did without things that were important to her, to provide a better life for her children. Mom was the best cook ever! She could turn a seemingly empty pantry into a meal for 12 people when unexpected guest stopped by. No one ever left hungry! She loved to garden, and her and my dad would plant a large garden and all Summer my mom would work canning, freezing, and preserving their crop. We always had the freshest and best long before organic gardening was in fashion! Mom was very crafty as well. She could sew anything; clothes, quilts, dog blankets, wedding dress for my sister, etc. You name it and if she did not know how, she would teach herself. I remember her making a ton of dolls, Ragedy Ann/Andy style for our local PTA club for an auction.
My mom raised us kids then decided she wanted to work. She started a janitorial service and was soon running a full on business, such that she had to hire employees and get a van dedicated to this job. She made good money and was quite pleased with herself! We were proud of her too!
Mom only went to the 4th grade, but it was VERY important to her that her children were educated and had every opportunity to be anything that they chose to do so. She even went back and got her GED and went to college as well!
Mom NEVER had a bad word to say about anyone. If someone was being obnoxious or down right bad, about the only thing she would say is, "Well it takes all kinds of people to make a world." She was a true Southern Lady with all the charm and graciousness that comes with that title.
Mom loved her family with all of her heart and soul, and we felt it, knew it, and loved her the same. She taught us good morals and family values. She taught us right from wrong, allowed us to make mistakes, and was there for us if we fell.
Mom was a good friend and confidant, but most of all was the BEST mother that anyone could have every hoped for. I can assure you, that if you ever had met her, she would have exceeded all of your expectations of the best mom in the world.
