Known as both Amelia and Emilie, she came to the United States from Bombach, Freiberg, Baden, Germany, on the SS Johannisberg and entered the port of New Orleans November 12, 1855 with her father, Sebastian Steiger, and some of her siblings. The rest of the family arrived on another boat, and the entire family settled in Hermann, Missouri, where she met and married Bernhard Stein. She and Bernhard were parents to Edward, Rosa, Mary Ann, Henry Bernard, Bernhardt Henry Martin, Anna Otilla, Bertha and Michael.

After Bernhard's death in 1901, Emilie applied for and was granted a widow's pension of $12.00, based on Bernhard's Civil War service. Emilie Stein was rather tall and thin, and when she went any place she always went by horse and buggy. She had a white horse of her own and called it Frank. In the Peace Valley/White Church area, she was known as "Tante Stein," the German equivalent of Aunt Stein. At the end of her life she lived with, in succession, two of her daughters and finally her sister.
