George was the youngest of seven children. He was named after his father's uncle, George Dimitrios Panagakos. On June 23, 1938, he was baptized at the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
In 1955, George graduated from James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. His first job after graduation was working for the Western Union Telegraph Company. He had a variety of jobs during his life, including elevator operator, mill worker, bartender, and waiter. He never married.
My Uncle George lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed celebrating New Year's Eve on Times Square in New York City, and one year went to New Orleans, Louisiana to celebrate Mardi Gras.
When I was 16 and in the hospital recovering from an appendectomy, he was unable to visit me during regular visiting hours because he was working evenings as a bartender. So he schemed to come in earlier. One afternoon he claimed to be delivering a pizza I'd ordered, and two days later he came in claiming to be my priest.
