Bill was the son of a shoemaker Mahlon Walton and his wife Emma.He was the younhgest of five children and had four sisters, the oldest which was Francis; aged nine years older than Bill. They grew up in Cheltenham, Pa.
His grand-neice Helen Garretson remembered that he would not marry until after his sister died. 1910 census: William Walton, city fireman, living at 2403 Turner St. with sister Frances Walton in the 47th Ward.
Frances died June 27, 1919 in Philadelphia. Her address was 1607 N. 21st St.
On September 17, 1919 he married Helen McArthur. His address at the time was 1607 N. 21st St. Once married, he moved in with his in-laws and her brother Bill at 1941 Ridge Avenue.
August 19, 1920 Inquirer: William W. Walton qualified for promotion to Captain in a recent Civil Service Commission examination.
March 16, 1921 Inquirer: William W. Walton selected for promotion to Captain; his address was listed as 1607 N. 21st St.
On May 29, 1924, the couple purchased a house at 288 N. Highland Ave. in Lansdowne, Delaware Co., Pa. They lived here with her brother William.
William was known as being so stingy that he would take the train downtown to the Inquirer just to get a free newspaper. In 1922 and 1937 he purchased properties in Ventnor, NJ.; 116 N. Portland Ave. and 6720 Monmouth Ave.
Fall 1934 voter registration lists him as the only registered voter at 1941 Ridge Avenue (Republican). He did not actually live here. Helen (Ridge) Garretson remembered that he used this address because he was a City employee.
William died of a massive heart attack on December 1, 1937. He and his wife are in an unmarked grave at Montrose cemetery.
