On December 2, 1992, our mother died in Holdenville. She was Dr. Imogene Butts Mayfield or simply "Dr. Imogene" to her friends and patients. She was born March 6, 1910 to Dr. A.M. Butts and Mazie Butts. She grew up in Holdenville and attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO. She then entered Medical School at the University of Oklahoma and recieved her medical degree in 1933. Dr. Mayfield was one of three women in that graduating class. It was very uncommon for women to be "doctors" in those days. After two years of internship in San Francisco, CA., she returned to Holdenville and joined her father, Dr. A.M. Butts, in his medical practice. In 1935 she married Elliott E. "Jimmy" Mayfield and had three children David, Jeanne and Danny. Dr. Butts died in 1947 and shortly thereafter, in 1951, Dr. Mayfield and her family moved to Dallas, TX., so that she could establish her medical practice there. She opened her own clinic in 1953 in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas and continued her practice at that location until 1983 when she retired. During her 50 years of medical practice, in addition to the countless sore throats, colds, sprains, broken bones, cuts and other things, she still managed to deliver and care for about 7,500 babies, more than the total population of Holdenville, by the way. Our mother spent most of her last years living in Dallas with her daughter and family. More recently she was a resident of Heritage Village Retirement Home in Holdenville where she lived with her sister Jessie Steen. She died at Heritage Village. She was an outstanding, unique women; a true pioneer. Her life touched and affected hundreds of other lives, all for the better. Now she is gone, but never forgotten. We all will miss her. Dr. Mayfield is survived by her sister Jessie Steen, her son Dr. David Mayfield of Baltimore, MD.; her daughter Jeanne M. Snow of Dallas, TX.; her son Danny Mayfield, also of Dallas, and five grandchildren. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Holdenville cemetery under the direction of Hudson Funeral Home.
