My beautiful Aunty Muriel was the 8th child in a family of 11 born to John Charles Williams (16 May 1879 - 17 June 1949) and Lydia Oberg (6 June 1881 - 8 December 1927)
Children: Grace (1900-1969); Mabel (1901-1902); John (1903-1959); Gladys (1905-1966); Eric (1909-1966); Ronald (1912-1912); Muriel Isabel (1912-1912); Muriel Winifred (1914-1966); Vera (1915-1919); Phyllis (1918-1935); Dorothy (1924 -)
I do not know very much about my Aunty Muriel, though I do know that she was one of two of my father's favourite sisters, after whom I was named.
Soon after arriving in Brisbane, my mother met and became close friends with my Aunty Muriel, and through her came to meet my father.
Aunty Muriel moved from Brisbane to Sydney with her son, Lionel Cox (born 5 December 1930) many years before I was born. Aunty Muriel doted on Lionel and gave him every opportunity in life. Because of her unselfish love and devotion for Lionel, he later went on to win gold and silver medals at the 1952 Olympic Games in Cophenhagen for cycling.
As I got older I remember Aunty Muriel making regular visits to our home to spend holidays with her brother, my father. To see them together, was to instinctively know that these two shared a very special closeness and love.
Aunty Muriel married Frank Campbell later on, but as far as I know, this marriage ended in divorce.
My father was diagnosed with cancer in late 1964, and Aunty Muriel's visits grew more frequent, until just prior to Christmas 1965, she arrived and said she had come to spend the remaining time of her brothers life with him.
Having Aunty Muriel in the home made a noticeable difference to my dad. His down days were becoming less frequently, and to add to his joy and thus his will to live, I told him I was expecting my second child in late September.
On 26 April 1966, Aunty Muriel came home from work feeling exceptionally tired and went to bed relatively early. During the night, she awoke in agony and the bed covered in blood. An ambulance was called, she was admitted to hospital and operated on for a ruptured aorta.
At first it appeared the operation was a success, but after several hours, the patch placed on the aorta burst, and she passed away.
Her death devestated my father, who lost the will to fight to continue to live. He joined his much loved sister on 2nd September 1966.
