Edith Raines was the third child born to John Raines and Emily Madeley. Her siblings were Emily Raines Schmidt, Annie Raines Vielhaber and James Raines. Her only brother, James, died when he was in his twenties from influenza. (His Widow and only son became a permenant part of the Raines, Hacker, Schmidt and Vielhaber families for their entire lives.)
Edith Raines married Elmer Frank Hacker on November 18, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri. They had three sons, the first born son was stillborn, then came Russell Howard and then third was Elmer Clyde.
Edith Hacker's niece, Pearl Vielhaber, frequently visited her Aunt Edith when she was a young girl in grade school. She would spend summers at her Aunt's home, since Elmer Hacker worked the night-shift at the Post-Dispatch and Annie Raines Vielhaber would want her sister to have company on the long summer evenings. Because of this bond, Edith gave Pearl her favorite doll and Pearl had it restrung and a beautiful new dress made. The doll at some point also aquired Annie Raines Vielhaber's hair when she cut it, and that made the doll that much more special to Pearl. A good token to remember her special Aunt and godmother.
