MARYLAND STATE TROOPER
SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Trooper First Class Lauren M. Ridge was a WWII veteran and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. After surviving the attack and leaving the service at the end of the war he joined the Maryland State Police on May 1, 1946
He was assigned to the Frederick Barracks when on July 14, 1950 he responded to a call and attempted to disarm a deranged 60 yr old man who had fired a rifle shot at two tax assessors who were there to value the property. Trooper Ridge was successful in disarming the man of the rifle however the suspect then produced a revolver from his waist line and shot Trooper Ridge five times at close range. The incident occurred on Northern Avenue north of Hagerstown, Maryland. The suspect died five weeks after the incident from injuries.
Funeral service was held at the Grace Evangelical United Bretheren Church. After the service a motorcycle detail of Maryland State Police escorted the funeral procession from the church to the Maryland State line where Pennsylvania State Police took over the escort to the cemetery.
Trooper First Class Ridge was the first Maryland State Trooper ever to be shot and killed in the line of duty. He was survived by his 28 yr old wife and 18 month old son.
