James Arthur "Jim" Hellems Sr was born on New Year's Eve of 1876 in Buffalo, New York, to James A Hellems and his wife Anna Maria Barrett. His father died when he was sixteen years old.
Jim was a fireman and engineer in the US Navy during the Spanish American War. The 1900 US Census of Erie County, New York, lists Jim as living with his uncle Patrick McLaughlin and family at 49 Van Renssalaer in Buffalo.
The 1920 US Census of Erie County, New York, lists Jim and Agnes as living at 242 Elk Street in Buffalo with two children still at home.
Jim Hellems died, 13 July 1937, aged 60, in Buffalo. His funeral was held on 15 July at St Brigid's Church and he was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. Because of his service during the war, his wife and unmarried daughter Gertrude were able to collect a $36 a month pension from the Navy.
Obituary Survived by his wife, Agnes; son, James Arthur Jr; and daughters, Gertrude and Mrs Thomas Dray. He is also survived by his mother, Anna Hellems; brothers, William and Frank; and sisters Mrs William Shea, Mrs Alice Green, and nuns, Sister M Lucretia and Sister M Yolanda of the Order of St Francis. --Buffalo Evening News
