He attended St. Aloysius Catholic Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.
Bill married Ione Jeannette Early on May 13, 1952 in Texarkana, Arkansas. Children: Terry Beth, Nancy Lin and William Harry. He was the most loving father; with a naturally happy disposition. He enjoyed cooking and was generous to a fault. People always enjoyed being around him. He had a beautiful, clear whistle and would whistle opera.
Bill grew up in the era of Big Band music and was a great dancer. He was visiting relatives in Los Angeles around 1947. They went to listen to a band in a large music hall where there happened to be a dance contest that night. Bill chose a dance partner out of the crowd and they wound up winning. A large trophy was presented to the couple. After descending the stage, he turned to his partner and simply said, "here you go," as he handed her the prize, and walked away. He always laughed when recalling that story saying, "I guess I thought it would look cool."
