Ellen 'Nellie' Gallagher was the eldest of six daughters of Peter Cornelius Gallagher and Mary Ferry Gallagher. Born in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania in 1896, she moved to Luzerne, Pennsylvania in 1906 along with her family. She never married, and had four nieces. She worked as the assistant housekeeper at the Hotel Sterling in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania for 14 years. At 11:30 a.m. on December 20, 1944, while at work, she suffered a stroke in the linen room of the hotel. She died two hours later.
