Tom Atkinson joined the Army Air Forces in 1942 at the age of 19 and became a glider pilot. Gliders carried troops and equipment and would crash land in predetermined landing zones.

While coming in for a landing at 2250 hours on 6 June 1944, Flight Officer Atkinson, flying first pilot, was struck by anti-aircraft fire. He died 7 June 1944 from the injuries received.

Gravesite Details

Tom was buried in the temporary military cemetery in Blosville, France, and then reinterred at the Florence National Cemetery with full military honors on November 19, 1948.
