Isabella Jane Harding of Sykesville, MD, died Feb. 8, 2010, at the age of 102. She was one of eight children born to the late Jacob F. and Mary T. Kerr Shatzer.
She married Otis A. Harding in 1929. Otis passed away in 1979.
She came to the Sykesville area in 1925, at age 18, and went to work at the Melville Woolen Company in Oakland Mills. She worked there until 1951, when the Mill was sold to Baltimore City for the Liberty Reservoir. She later worked in Sykesville for the Ridgely Construction Company and then the A.G. Parrott Company, retiring in 1972.
She was a life member and the oldest living member of the Sykesville fire company auxiliary. She took over as treasurer of the fire company in 1942, when her husband, who was the treasurer, joined the Army. She continued as treasurer until October 1945. She was very active in "Gary's Widows," volunteering many hours at Springfield Hospital. She lived in Sykesville from 1929 until recently.
Isabelle was an avid sports fans. She loved watching NFL football and was a former Baltimore Colts and currently a Baltimore Ravens fan. She cheered on the Baltimore Orioles over the years and attended a 1966 World Series game in Baltimore with her late husband Otis.
She is preceded in death by her father Jacob Shatzer; mother Mary Kerr Shatzer; brother John Kerr Shatzer; sisters Jeanetta Hooper; Pauline Webster; Mary E. Greer; Helen I. Brake;Alice E. McClure, Virginia Martin.
She is survived by five nephews: Terry McClure of Millersville, MD; Jeff Martin Fayetteville, PA. and Eric Martin of Greencastle, PA; Gregg Martin of Bangor, PA; John Greer of Marriottsville, MD. Two nieces; Rose Marie Baer of Chambersburg, PA; Bonnie Harding of Severna Park, MD.
I enjoyed my outings with Aunt Isabelle. I would drive and she would tell me how to get to our destinations. Though Aunt Isabelle, lived alone in her own home until age 102, she could no longer drive a car, and only got out when someone else drove. She loved going to Bob Evans to eat and would always get a glass of ice tea with her meal. She was always pleasant to be around. She loved double stuffed oreo cookies.
Aunt Isabelle, you belong to Heaven, and we are comforted knowing that you are with your family and our Heavenly Father. We love you.
In closing, Aunt Isabelle, I would like to say that my time spent with you has taught me what really matters, in life, here on earth. Giving of ourselves, and being there, for those during their time of need is the greatest gift. I am glad that I was there for you and had your best interest and happiness in my heart.
