Harold Gootee, age 89, of Elmwood, WI died on Wednesday night, Jan. 27th at the Heritage Home.

Harold "Jack" Nicholas Gootee passed peacefully into the loving arms of his Maker on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at the Heritage Nursing Home in Elmwood, WI. On February 4, Jack would have celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born in the year 1920 to Silas Henry and Golden Susan (Lasswell) Gootee in Loogootee, Indiana. Jack grew up in the Loogootee area with his family including 9 other brothers and sisters.

As a young man to help support his family, Jack worked in a coal mine, on farms and on the railroad. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1941, and became a member of the 1st Marine Division. During WWII, he was involved in the first wave of attacks at Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands. Jack was combat wounded and was consequently honorably discharged. Later, he was duly awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his discharge, Jack moved to Springfield, Ohio, to work for the New York Central Railroad. There he met Ann Elizabeth Lannert, his wife of 65 years. The two were married on June 24, 1944, and would be blessed with 3 children: Pamela, Timothy and Benhart. He later became a master plumber with his own business, and took a job at Wright/Patterson Air Force Base where he worked as a master plumber and steam fitter. He was also a compassionate land-lord and owner of over 16 rental properties.

Jack was a life member of the VFW Post 1031, the Purple Heart Club Post 620 and Disabled American Veterans Post 13. Jack and Ann visited Australia and New Zealand in 1989. They were able to see and experience the country he had fallen in love with during his recovery in a WWII hospital. In stature, he was a little man, but a tenacious fighter who overcame much in his life. Jack had an old-world charm and the rare ability to make those who came in contact with him feel incredibly special. In 2007, Jack and Ann relocated to Glenwood City, Wisconsin, to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Bob Keil. When it became apparent Jack was in need of specialized care, he was moved to the Alzheimer's unit at The Heritage Nursing Home in Elmwood, WI.

Jack is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter - Pamela (Robert) Keil of Glenwood City; grandchildren - Wendy (Christopher) Gabriel of Fargo, ND (children: Caleigh & Cadence), Jane (Scott) Strong of Menomonie, WI (children: Drake, Colin, Forrest & Graeme), Heidi (Jasen) Mark of Plymouth, MN (children: Brittany & Ashley Mattson), Sarah (Kevin) Heinonen of Redlands, CA (children: Bailey, Brayden, Bellamy & Brighten); son - Timothy (Cindy) Gootee of Springfield, OH; grandchildren - Kimberly Gootee of Springfield, OH, Adam (Leslie) Gootee of Spencerville, OH (children: Samantha, Lucas & Tyra), Rachel (Tom) Shoemaker of Lima, OH; son - Benhart Gootee of Springfield, OH; grandchild - Kelly Gootee of Columbus, OH; sister - Ann Lyon of Enon, OH; and sister-in-law - Mary Gootee of Springfield, OH.
