My great-great-great-grandmother Penelope was the daughter of Neri and Anna Maria Thomas Blessing and the widow of Berry Carter, who died in 1907. She was survived by her sons Charles, Edward, Tilmond, Frank and Cornelius Carter, daughters Ada Coulter (at whose home she passed away) and Katie Rice, and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Penelope and Berry started married life in Frederick County, Maryland, but in the 1880s moved to Molers Cross Roads, West Virginia. They had a farm there. She attended the Uvilla Lutheran Church in West Virginia. She died several weeks after falling and breaking her hip.
Here are some memories from Penelope's late granddaughter Mary Coulter Taylor, as told to her daughter Mary Lou: "She remembers her grandmother as a widow who divided her time during the year staying for periods of time with her various children. She stayed with Mom's parents, the Coulters, for a great deal of the time. In the summer she went to West Virginia and stayed with her children there. Mother was very young and went along to wait on her. Mom would stay in the same room with her there, sleeping in another bed. Penelope was a very jolly, nice woman. She was robust in size. Mother said that Penelope thought that if you did something for her, she should pay for it. She said she gave her money all the time."
