Alonzo Chase, 18 years old son of Henry Chase, superintendent of the crude oil department of the Standard Oil Company at its Constable Hook plant, was drowned yesterday at Copake Lake, near Hudson, N. Y. where he was one of the summer colony.
The young man was well known in Bayonne, and the news of his death will be a shock to a host of friends.
Recently his family moved to Staten Island, where they are now living. Mr. Chase, who was in his office when he learned of his son's death, is prostrated.
Alonzo Chase went to the water with his brother-in-law, Richard Gaddis, of New York, entered a row boat alone and pulled three hundred feet from shore and dived overboard.
He was a fair swimmer, but soon he shouted for help, and H. C. Norton of Yonkers made fpor the only boat in sight to go to his rescue, in which Mr. Gaddis assisted.
Unfortunately the boat was fastened to the shore, and when the would-be rescuers finally broke the chain they found the boat was without oars.
Norton used a piece of wood as a paddle, while Gaddis paddled with both hands.
They were within one hundred feet of Alonzo Chase when he sank.
It is believed the young man was seized with cramps."
