|Birth: ||Jun. 11, 1828, England|
|Death: ||Mar. 31, 1911|
Mary was the 7th of 11 children (two sets of twins), born in Barnstaple, Devonshire, England. Her father owned an ironmonger & builders business. They lived on Joy St. and then on High St. Her mother died when she was 17. She was raised in the Church of England and was well educated, "had high morals," and spoke fluent French.
A milliner by trade, Mary had her own business in Jersey, England. Mormon Elders taught her that faith and she and her sister Catherine joined the Mormon church when she was 21. Mary's father was bitterly opposed to the Mormons and disowned the two after they ran away from home to go to Utah. The two sisters wrote to him often, but he never wrote or spoke to them again.
They sailed with Eugene A. Henriod aboard the ship Elvira Owen that left Liverpool for America on February 15, 1853. They arrived in New Orleans on March 31, and from there went by steamer up the Mississippi River to Keokuk, Iowa. After visiting Nauvoo, Illinois, they set out across the Plains in the Captain Cyrus H. Wheelock Company. They walked every step of the way and arrived in Salt Lake City on October 6, 1853.
Mary was married to Eugene A. Henriod, on November 5, 1854 by Brigham Young. They lived in Salt Lake until 1855 when they moved to American Fork, Utah.
Brigham Young asked her sister Catherine to marry him. She turned him down and told him she would not become part of his "harem." Catherine renounced the Mormon faith and then went on to California where she married Frank Larkin in Nevada City.
NOTE: Her death certificate incorrectly shows she died on March 30. However, both her funeral card and headstone say March 31, 1911. Her obituary mentions that she died "Friday morning at 3:50 o'clock," which also correspnds with March 31, 1911.
