My Grandma, Lydia K. "Katie" Schweitzer, 91, died Jan. 11, 2010.
She was born Nov. 3,1918, in Springdale, Ky., the daughter of Jesse Garrett and Ida (Leming) Garrett, and resided in Alexandria most of her lifetime.
Grandma's gifts and talents were many. At age 13 she worked at a printing shop then later she drove a coal truck. She managed Yates Grocery Store and was a production worker at Haines-Stellite, both formerly of Alexandria. She managed the former Hoosier Meat Market for 17 years until their tragic fire in 1963. She then worked at a Hoosier Meat Market in Marion before choosing to do home health care and house cleaning in the Alexandria area.
She was a member of the Church of St. Mary at Alexandria. She enjoyed collecting antique dishes and Santas. She enjoyed all kinds of needlework and was known for sending cards to friends and family. She has kept a daily journal of her life for several years. Grandma celebrated life to its fullest and touched everyone she met.
Left behind to cherish her memories are two sons, Joseph (Jan) Schweitzer of Muncie, and John (Sherrie)Schweitzer of Mansville, Okla.; two daughters, Jackie (Barney) Maynard and Jean (Francis) Flecker, all of Alexandria; 21 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; two sons- in- law, John Taylor of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Jerry Alumbaugh of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 48 years, Arvid Schweitzer, in 1984; two daughters, Janet Alumbaugh in 1992 and Joyce Taylor in 2009; and a brother and four sisters.
