TOWNSEND YOUTH DIES OF INJURIES FOLLOWING CRASH
Maryville Times, Maryville, Tennessee -- July, 1965
A young Townsend sailor, bringing his bride of three weeks home to meet his parents and to celebrate his 20th birthday, died Saturday of injuries received in a head-on collision near Ranger, Ga., on U.S. 411.
Kyle David Hancock and his wife, the former Patricia Herron of Aiken, SC were driving from the naval Training Center at Brunswick, Ga. where he had just completed training as an air traffic controller. The Hancock car and one driven by Robert Dean, Calhoun, Ga. collided head-on at 5:30 A.M. Saturday, July 17. Mrs. Hancock whom relatives said was driving the car, is reported in critical condition in an Atlanta, Ga. hospital. Dean was also injured in the crash.
Hancock, a 1963 graduate of Townsend High, married his wife, June 30. She was a chemistry teacher at Brunswick High School.
Buried: Holston Memorial Gardens; now Eastview Memorial Gardens.
Postscript: I often receive e-mails asking about Kyle's wife, Pat. Pat was by far the most seriously injured in the car crash. Kyle was taken to a small hospital in Calhoun, GA where the doctors assured our parents and the Navy that, This boy isn't hurt and moving him could cause complications. He'll wake up and think he's got home." That sadly was not the end result.
Pat was taken immediately to Emory University Hospital. She was first released in January the following year. Still in cast she flew to visit us in California. It was wonderful but very sad to pass the bedroom and see the photos of Kyle across the dresser. She had just began facial surgery and developed a reaction and had to see a doctor in the group where I worked -- if memory serves me correctly, daily.
For several years, Pat was in and out of hospitals. When Kyle received his orders that he would be kept at the school in GA, he rushed home and according to Pat, "Took the stairs two at a time to give her the news." A neighbor, in insurance, had talked to Kyle and Pat about life insurance. This neighbor was working on his car when Kyle parked and Pat told me that Kyle slapped this neighbor on the back and said, "Write that policy." It was months later that Pat had her Dad call the insurance company, who had been looking for Pat & Kyle. Pat was often in military hospitals. She, of course, came in contact with many young military men returning from VietNam. She spent much of the insurance money flying parents, wife, girlfriend to visit these young men in the hospital.
The doctors gave Pat's parents no hope for her survival. Pat has since remarried, bore and reared two sons and resides in her home state of South Carolina.
