She dedicated her life to the profession of nursing. A kind person who always had empathy for the patients in her care. Known as "Bo" to her family and friends. Bo's initial medical training was at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mabel Shumate's only child, Gertrude B. O'Connor, passed away on September 14, 2006 and is buried next to her at Venice Memorial Gardens.

Bo cared for her sister, Mercedes "Peggy" Melnicoff , who developed Breast Cancer and volunteered for one of the first experimental chemotherapy programs in the early 1960's.

Bo was the daughter of Carrie Wilson Long (1881-1965) and also had a sister Letha Fay "Tillie" Dylewski (1909-1953).
