He was the father of Harry Smith and Orpha Heselden. After Orpha's death in 1939, he and his wife raised their granddaughter, Florence Marie Heselden. Florence was 2 years old at the time of her mother's death. Her father died six weeks before her birth.
Otis worked as a farm-hand until his retirement, and then was a custiodian at the Methodist Church in Oneida, Il. He also had a large garden and sold fruit and produce around town. He and his wife didn't have much, but they never turned a hungry person away from their door without at least a sandwich.
