Johnny was the son of Alfonzo and Isabel (Montemayor) Cruz.
He passed from cancer at the young age of 14.

A fibrosarcoma is a cancerous tumor that originates in the connective tissue found at the ends of bones of the arm or legs, and then spreads to other surrounding soft tissues. In patients above age 10, it is quite aggressive. I suspect poor John suffered minor joint pain that was overlooked, or treated with home remedies, and his cancer likely grew quite a bit before it was diagnosed. In the early 1950's, diagnosis and treatment of this rather uncommon type of cancer was not as advanced as it has become.

Being athletic, Johnny excelled at anything in which he participated. Johnny, Marvin Farris, & Junior Montemayor called themselves the "three Musketeers". When the school he attended (Holy Rosary) won their basketball championship, the team made Johnny their honorary team captain as he was no longer able to participate. The whole team took the trophy to the hospital for Johnny to see. He has never been forgotten in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
