MEMORIES OF MY BELOVED AND PHENOMENAL GREAT AUNT MATTIE MAE
------
My Great Aunt, Mattie Mae McKinney-Behn, was born to Roger McKinney and Gertrude 'Bamma' Woodard-McKinney on 02 Nov 1915 (dates vary :-)in Navasota, Grimes County, Texas. She was one of five children of this union. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Frank McKinney, Roger McKinney Jr., Katie Mae McKinney, and Richard 'Boy Blue' McKinney.

My Aunt spent her formative years in Grimes County, Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas. She eventually migrated to California after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802 in 1942. My Aunt went to work in(1944) Kaiser Shipyard #3, located in Richmond CA, as a "Wendy." She was one of many women who were assigned to work as welders. They worked around the clock shifts to ensure that the, "...all-out campaign to speed 11 AP-5s (battle ships) on their way by November 1 for an urgent assignment in the Pacific," was completed on time! My Aunt had received a 'Service Citation Award' (hangs in my office) acknowledging her WWII contribution on the U.S.S. Tazewell; one of the 'first' AP-5 battleships launched! After the war, my Aunt worked for many years in San Francisco at the US Post Office Annex. When she retired from the postal service, she began another career; she worked at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley as Head Cook and Kitchen Co-Manager. She retired from that position in 1980. She was not done!

My Aunt loved to cook, which she did very well! Her passion for cooking led to another(her final!)career which she pursued for many years. She became a caterer. She caterered weddings, church affairs, a Hollywood movie and many social and political celebrations throughout the Bay Area.

My Aunt was also a deeply religious woman who had joined 'Evergreen Baptist Church,' in 1961 and was baptized by the late Reverend James L. Richard. She was also, a faithful member of Evergreen's November Calendar Club.

My Aunt was deeply loved and is truly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.

"I will always love you, Aunt Mattie!"

Your niece, Deborah
