WEB SPECIAL: Local VFW renames post to honor Vietnam soldier KIA

WHITLEY CITY — VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 5127 has bestowed perhaps its greatest honor upon a Pine Knot soldier who was killed in Vietnam.
During a ceremony on Thursday, local VFW members voted to name their post after Charles Edward Moore. Adjutant Sam Perry recounted Moore's brave service.
Charles Edward Moore was born January 9, 1949, to Luther and Opal Moore. He graduated from Pine Knot High School in 1967 and was soon drafted.
After graduating from basic and advance training, Moore began his tour of duty in Vietnam on December 6, 1968. Specialist Moore was active in counter attacks on the Tet Offensive and was killed in action by small arms fire on June 3, 1969, barely six months into his tour. It is not known whether Moore was killed in a specific battle or on a routine patrol, Perry said.
Prior to his death, Moore had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Badge with machine gun bar, Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar, Marksman Badge with automatic rifle bar, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal.
Moore was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. His name is also included on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
"He has been remembered by his family but few others have heard his name," Perry said, adding that the post's approval would help change that. "Hopefully the name of Charles Edward Moore will be remembered. In the eyes of God and his countrymen, he is a hero."
Sherrill Owens echoed that sentiment, noting that the Silver Star is a great achievement.
The ceremony was attended by Moore's mother Opal, his brother Harold, cousin Julie Spradlin and her husband Hural.
"We appreciate the post for recognizing Charles," Harold Moore said.
