Mary was the second of three children born to John McKee Woods and Marilla J. Hale. Her older brother, John A. Woods, was born in approximately 1861. Her younger brother, Oliver B. Woods, was born on 29 November 1866. It is believed that all three children were born in Central California.
At some point between Mary's birth in 1865 and the time at which they appear in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, the family had relocated to San Diego, California. Between the 1870 census and the 1880 census, Mary's mother, Marilla, ceases to be listed with the family - it is not known if she died, or if John and Marilla divorced (the 1880 census lists John as "single" rather than "widowed" or "divorced"), and no further record of Marilla's whereabouts has been located. On 01 July 1880, John, remarried to Rosa A. Babb. Mary later gained three half-sisters (Stella Agnes, Clara Mae and Alice Varian Woods) from that marriage.
According to the diary that she kept in 1885, at the age of 20, Mary was still attending school in Los Angeles and was seemingly living with her maternal grandparents, John Brooks Hale and Sarah M. Farmer Hale.
On 04 June 1885, Edward Thayer Cook (a local book merchant in her neighborhood in Los Angeles) wrote a letter to Mary's father, John Woods, asking for permission to marry her. On 02 July 1885, John wrote back to Edward, giving his blessing (copy of original letter is included in Mary's photos in this memorial). Mary and Edward were married on 13 July 1885, in San Diego, California. They settled in Los Angeles and later had four children (Fred Rich, Katherine Woods, Mary Edna and Edward Thayer II) and were married until his death on 05 November 1912.
On 26 June 1916, Mary then married Basil Beall, who was the father of her former son-in-law, Harry Hammond Beall (who had been married to Mary's daughter Mary Edna). Following Basil's death in 1919, Mary spent the remaining years of her life living with her son, Edward Thayer Cook II, and her sister-in-law, Joanna Cook (who preceded her in death in 1939).
The family often traveled together, and pictures show Mary enjoying vacations on Catalina Island, where the family regularly rented a house each summer. Mary was devoted to her family, and was affectionately known as "Nanna" or "Nannie".
Mary passed away at approximately 5:00pm on 12 July 1942, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and John McCluskey Burbaw. Cause of death was "accute coronary occlusion". She was 77.
Mary is buried in a family plot at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery - the plot was originally purchased by Mary's husband upon the death of their infant son, Fred. Mary was laid to rest next to her first husband, Edward Thayer Cook. In the same plot now rest Edward's parents John Bryce Cook and Catherine Keeler Cook, his sister Joanna, all four of their children, and John McCluskey Burbaw - husband to Katherine Woods Cook Burbaw.
