Velma was the daughter of Alfred Hiram McKim and Cora Ellen Fullerton. She married Charles "Crofford" Johnson on Nov. 28, 1912 in Oklahoma City, OK. No children were born to this union.
Velma was a tall woman of about 5' 10" and played basketball in her youth. Her team was set to go to Germany to play in the Olympics, but the team was disqualified at the last moment on a technicality.
Velma was the quiet, thoughtful, introspective, and perceptive member of the McKim family. She had a great fondness for cats and black Minx cats were her favorite breed. She wrote poetry, quilted, and was an excellent cook, running a catering business out of her home. She also owned and operated a hotel in San Bernardino with her sister Esther for a time. Both Velma and her sister were members of the Magnolia Rebekah Lodge #94 and the Sarah Rebekah Lodge 364 in Fontana and they were active members of their church. She had a deep love of family and was interested and excited about preserving and documenting her family history. Velma's foresight for saving family letters and other family memorabilia has been a treasure for our family genealogists. She is responsible for spearheading my genealogy work and research. She also gave me her antique bedroom set that she bought at auction from the estate of Mary Pickford!
