SPRINGFIELD — Joan Delores Smith of Springfield died Sept. 18, 2011 of cancer. She was 78.

She was born June 21, 1933, in Ipswich, South Dakota, to Gustav and Christina Gugel Job.

She married James Smith on Nov. 5, 1952, in Ipswich, S.D. He died Feb. 1, 2008.

She graduated from Ipswich High School in 1951. She was a homemaker and worked as a hostess, waitress and cashier. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, listening to Country Music, reading her Bible, television, movies, reading her newspaper, and spending time with family and friends. She attended Northwood Christian Church.

Joan had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved to visit and tell funny stories and make people laugh. She was an excellent cook, and could whip up a meal for a houseful in no time. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She always made sure you knew how glad she was that you stopped in, even if for just a moment.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen and wife Sherry of Creswell, Allen and wife Debi of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Tommy of Prineville; two daughters, DeAnn Daves and husband Danny of Springfield and Debbie Cutshall and husband Jim of Anchorage; two brothers, Clarence Job and wife Barbara of Bend and Edwin Job and wife Judy of Aberdeen, S.D.; four sisters, Anne Heitz of Aberdeen, Elaine (Verna) Hornaman and husband Joe W. of Apache Junction, Ariz., Lila Rose of Mills, Wyo., and Janice Hammrich and husband Harlan of Belfair, Wash.

She was "Mamma" to seven grandchildren, Mindi Hall and husband Jody, Joel Smith and partner Jason Glenn, Brandon Smith, Stephanie Francis and husband Tim, Andy Daves and wife Rye, Taylor Smith, and Chris Cutshall; and five great grandchildren, Ethan Conner, Allison Hall, Alexis Hall, Bryce Hall, Atlas Daves, and posthumously, Trice Daves.

A son, James Edward Smith, died July 3, 1957.

She is greatly missed. Even into her seventies, she had a never ceasing curiosity about the world around her, and a desire to learn something new each day. This will live on in us. Her love, laughter, and friendship was so special and so cherished.
