He was born in Wilmington, N.C. on December 24, 1921, the oldest son of the late Fred Burr and Etta Howell Barnhill.

Mr. Barnhill was a graduate of New Hanover High School. He held Golden Gloves in boxing in North Carolina. Mr. Barnhill was a World War II veteran of the United States Army serving in the Pacific Theater.

Surviving are his wife Helen "Iola" Greer Barnhill of the home. Three daughters - Phyllis Wicker (b. 5/4/52) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Kathleen Parker (b. 9/25/53) of Burgaw North Carolina, and Helen Chiverton (b. 7/14/55) of Wilmington, North Carolina. He is survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Dad was a workaholic. He was rarely seen sitting at rest. His favorite pastime was repair and painting of his beloved home at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. In his later years, when he had slowed down a little, he loved to sit on his porch and watch the yachts sail down the waterway. One of his favorite pranks was to glue a quarter to the street near the house and watch the tourists attempt to pick it up as they walked by on the way to the beach. His philosophy of life was "never give up." So long Dad. We'll see you at our sunset.
