Teacher and Artist -
Born to Orrin W. Newell and Martha "Lord" Newell. Various documents show Ida's birth year from 1855 to 1858 and place of birth as Illinois and New York. I used the info in the 1860 (age 5) and 1870 (age 16) US Census' where the year and place of birth were given by her parents.
Ida taught school at the Wendell Phillips School in Yakima County, also schools in Walla Walla and Colfax, WA. I've been told she was a talented artist focusing on the Northwest Cascades.
Husbands: She first married Lafayette Kossuth Austin on 8-5-1881. After his death she (age 36) married Alfred Marion Miller (age 56 of Preston, Ct.)on 10-11-1891 in Yakima City, WA. She later married Herman or Harry A. Thoreson of Eugene, OR.
The 1890 Census shows Ida and her 2 boys living with Lafayette's younger brother, Victor Fremont Austin. The census indicates that Victor and Ida are husband and wife, but I believe this to be for convention's sake. I have not found a marriage notice, license or certificate for them.
Ida and Lafayette had two sons: Frederick Newell Austin and Lina Clarence Austin (1882-1951).
She took one of Frederick's young sons to live with her for 3 months, and during that time (written in his memoir) he learned a full school year's education. Unfortunately because he was perceived as teacher's pet, the other children in Ida's school refused to talk or play with him. He wrote he felt lonely and unhappy. When given a chance to return home, he did. Ida was not happy.
Her son Lina bought her a Mitchell Touring car, but she never learned to drive it properly. Being under five feet tall she had to look through the steering wheel when she drove lurchingly to town...all the way in 1st or 2nd gear. Fortunately (for her and others on the road) one of the local farmers would often drive her to town in the Mitchell for groceries and errands.
In her own unique way, she contributed much through her teaching and paintings. I have to admire what she accomplished as a single mother...keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table for her sons and herself.
