Portsmouth, VA - Hazel "Winnie" Greening, 93, passed away Monday, January 23, 2012. Winnie was predeceased by her husband, John Henry Greening, Sr., her son, John Henry Greening, Jr., and her parents Bertha and Bert Heffelfinger. She was a native of Summit Co., Ohio, a Presbyterian and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Ohio.
Hazel is survived by a daughter, Nancy Parrino and her husband, Frank of Portsmouth; a brother, James Heffelfinger of Barberton, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Greening of Lexington, NC; 5 grandchildren, Cathy Davis and husband, Ricky of Elizabeth City, NC, Christine Paradee of Portsmouth, Caroline Morefield and husband, Eric, of Richmond, Laura Myers and husband, Alan of Baltimore, MD, Lisa Lemmings and husband, Eugene of Lexington, NC; 9 great-grandchildren, Karen, Jane, Jennifer, Eric, Connor, Brian, Amanda, and Jonathan; and five great-great grandchildren, Madison, Sabrina, Gage, Chasen and Samantha.
A graveside service will be held in Ohio in late spring. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association 4560 Princess Anne Rd. Virginia Beach, Va. 23462.

Gramma Winnie was a stage 3 breast cancer survivor of more than 20 years. She also survived a ruptured duodenal ulcer from which she completely bled out. She was well-known for her iron will having gotten into trouble her first day in school for refusing to tell the teacher her name; she was not fond of it. We feel that this iron will is what she called upon to survive her cancer and ulcer. We always knew that she would go when SHE wanted to and not a minute sooner. Gramma was great at playing Rummy and never lost her touch for winning. Winnie loved children and was called on more than once for her excellent day care skills when grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, thus the family term "Winnie Babies" was born.
Gramma Winnie was much loved and will be greatly missed every day. - Laura Myers
