Sudie "Sugar" Jane Howard was born in Clay County, KY to Zachariah Howard and Mary Elizabeth [Asher] Howard and attended school in Corbin, KY. She later attended college at Richmond, KY. After school, she worked in her father's hotel and candy store in downtown Corbin.

On August 4, 1923, she married Charles Edwin "Ed" Martin, a boilermaker on Louisville & Nashville Railroad. They lived in Loyall, Harlan County, KY. Sudie and Ed had three boys, Charles Edwin Martin, Jr. (1924), George Anderson Martin (1927), and Homer Harrison Martin (1929).

While living in Loyall, KY, Sudie was the town clerk and very active in the Eastern Star. Ed suffered from a long illness and passed away on August 22, 1946. Sudie remarried in 1950 to Robert Lester Kennedy, a retired Navy CPO and they moved to Inverness, Florida. While living in Inverness, they managed two fishing camps on the Lake Tsala Apopka chain until retiring.

After her husband's death on August 22, 1975, Sudie remained in Inverness until she passed way in 1991.
