Daughter of Robert Edward Brewer b. May 23, 1871 and Blanche Julia Palmer b. August 27, 1889.

Paternal grandparents: Samuel Bolling Brewer b. August 27, 1832 and Rebecca Attaway b. October 12, 1841.

Maternal grandparents: J. A. Quitman Palmer b. March 10, 1848 and Elizabeth Belle Barr b. June 23, 1851.

Emil married Bernis Wilson Carmichael on August 24, 1936 in Amarillo, TX. The couple had one child, Julia Diane. Emil and Bernis made their home in LaMesa, TX, Brownfield, TX, and Elida, NM (1941-1956). Emil moved to Lubbock, TX shortly after Bernis died and then to Norman, OK to be near her daughter in 1992.

After graduating from Memphis High School, Memphis, TX in 1927, she attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX and West Texas College in Canyon, TX. She received a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1935.

She worked as a reporter for the Pampa Times, Pampa, TX; Memphis News, Memphis, TX; Amarillo Times, Amarillo, TX; Elida Record (Editor), Elida, NM; Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Lubbock, TX; and the Texas Tech University News and Publications Office, Lubbock, TX.

Emil was School Editor during her tenure at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. She developed the "Teen Page" which appeared in the paper every Thursday and contained columns by student reporters from each of the junior high schools and high schools in Lubbock. The page was one of the paper's most popular features.

Emil was named one of "Lubbock's Pioneer Women" for her appointment as the first woman to head the Texas Tech University Office of News and Publications.

She co-authored The First Sixty-Two Years: A History of Methodist Hospital published by the Dept. of Development and Public Relations, Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas in 1980.

Emil was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church of Lubbock, Association of Women in Communications, Lubbock Chapter, and the League of Women Voters.
