My father.

Eldest of four children born to Luther McLane Carmichael and Lillie M. Stansell.

Paternal grandparents: William Wilson Carmichael b. July 19, 1839 and Susanna Bailey b. October 7, 1839.

Maternal grandparents: Baron DeKalb Stansell b. November 25, 1833 and Caroline "Carrie" Jane Prichard b. March 18, 1837.

Bernis married Emil Brewer on August 24, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas. The couple had one child, Julia Diane. Bernis and Emil made their home in LaMesa, TX, Brownfield, TX, and Elida, NM (1941-1956).

Bernis moved with his parents in about 1907 from Cisco, Eastland County, Texas to Kenna, New Mexico Territory. In 1911 the family moved to a homestead three miles southeast of Kenna. New Mexico became a state in 1912.

Bernis lived in Lovington, NM during his last year of school so that he could graduate from an accredited high school in preparation for admission to a new college scheduled to open in 1925 in Lubbock, TX. He entered Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University 1969-present) in September 1925 and graduated in 1929 with a degree in Animal Husbandry.

(Note: The school nearest to the family ranch was in Elida, NM. Elida High School gained accreditation in 1925 or 1926.)

Bernis returned to help manage the family ranch at Kenna, but the death of his father and the economic depression of the 1930s made it necessary to seek other employment. He worked as a field agent for the Soil Conservation Service in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico from 1935 until 1949. After leaving the Soil Conservation Service he worked for a local business and later operated his own business in Elida, Roosevelt County, New Mexico.

Bernis loved music, particularly the "big band sound," and sang tenor in local quartets. Was active in the Elida Lions Club and the PTA. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
