Martha Drew Lindley, 99, a resident of Lebanon for 60 years, died peacefully in her assisted living residence in Denver, Colo., on Sept. 9, 2011.

Martha was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Eglin, Ky., near Big Hill, in Jackson County. She was the youngest of six children of Benjamin and Mary Hellard Drew. After Benjamin’s death in 1913, Mary married Sampson Malicote (deceased), and Martha was a loving big sister to her seven younger siblings.

The family moved from Kentucky to southern Indiana in 1926, and Martha graduated in the Class of 1930 from Orleans High School. She excelled in art, shorthand, typing, Latin and algebra, and she went on to study secretarial and business skills at Bedford Business College, and Indiana University and University of Michigan extensions. For the rest of her life, Martha was known for her clarity and accuracy of writing and speaking.

Martha married Paul Lindley (deceased) in 1933, and was a devoted homemaker and mother to their three children, Peggy, Barbara and Barry. After their divorce in 1941, Martha led and supported her family, moving to Lebanon in 1946 to become secretary of the First Baptist Church.

Always an enthusiastic booster of Lebanon, Martha was grateful for the opportunities for herself and her three children, all of whom graduated from Lebanon High School and from colleges in Indiana. Martha taught them all to love learning and to always do their best.

After leaving her position as church secretary, Martha was employed at Industrial Filter Corporation (Delpark), then Indiana Commercial Filters, and then at Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis until her retirement in 1977.

Much of Martha’s life was focused on her far-flung family. She was supportive in their disappointments and gladdened by their achievements. She was thrilled to visit places such as Alaska, Edinburgh, Hawaii and Paris with her family. Yet, she was also content in her Northfield Drive home, chatting with her neighbors, flying her flag daily, cultivating her roses, larkspur, and jonquils, and watching the finches that came to her bird feeder. She especially enjoyed the dogwood and the redbud in the Indiana spring, and remembering her childhood in Kentucky.

Martha was a lifelong devoted Baptist, following in her mother Mary’s footsteps and pointing her children toward righteous lives. She loved her churches, the Scriptures, the hymns and prayers. In Lebanon, she also was a member of the Zonta organization and volunteered as a Gray Lady at Witham Memorial Hospital.

Martha was devoted to her mother Mary, crediting her and the Lord for all her strengths in life. After Martha retired, she cared for Mary in her own home in Lebanon and in Mary’s home in Bedford until Mary’s death at age 104.
