Raffaele Santa Maria was shot on March 5, 1909 in Newark, New Jersey. He is a bartender, possibly the owner of a bar. The newspaper refers to him as the proprietor. He was killed by a Newark police officer, Thomas Adubato. Mrs. Santa Maria said that Raffaele and Adubato knew each other well, but that their relations were strained. Adubato was involved witha brewery and wanted Santa Maria to buy beer from him. He did, but the customers did not like it, so he refused to buy more.
