Born Feb. 21, 1920, in Jackson, Michigan, to Frank Edward Hones and Lora May Martin.

He received both his B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Michigan and served in the US Air Force where he taught Atomic Theory as an assistant professor (AFROTC, Texas) for five years during the 1950's and helped establish the NORAD operation facilities in Colorado Springs in the mid 1960's, before being sent to Saudi Arabia as Personnel Advisor - Royal Saudi Air Force. In 1967, he was transferred to Langley in Virginia and served as Deputy Director of Administrative Series for Tactical Air Command (TAC), until his retirement from military service as Lieutenant Colonel. He then served as Vice President of Financial Affairs at Christopher Newport College for 13 years, until his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and enjoyed gardening, genealogy, history, reading and especially music, playing the violin from age 12.
