American architect from California who is best known as the supervising architect of the Master Plan for the University of California Berkeley campus and as being the founder of their Architecture program. Other well known buildings of his include the Campanile, California Memorial Stadium, Sather Gate and the Hearst Greek Theatre, all located on the UC Berkeley campus. He also designed the Marin Circle, the entrance pillars on The Alameda, stairways, benches and native stone pillars used as street markers in the Northbrae area of Berkeley. He was elected a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 1901 and a number of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
