William was the oldest son of Joseph and Virginia Black likely named after his father's oldest and youngest brothers. When he was about 9 years old his father followed the oil fields for work, and migrated from Pennsylvania to Findlay, and by 1900 the family called Lima, their home. His father continued to travel however, and worked in the Oklahoma area in the early 1900's. William began working for the Buckeye Oil Co. out of state, but fell ill to Congestive Heart Failure and was forced to return home. He remained at home about 3 weeks, before his untimely demise at age 28.
