Vern was the son of Royce and Iva (Cavanaugh) Nightenhelser. He was born in Ontario Canada. He married Betty Kierstead and they had two sons, Jim and Joe. Vern was stationed in Japan in World War II. He retired from General Motors in Marion after 25 years of service. He raised angus cows on his "4N" farm and liked to fix things. He was also a Mason.
