Sergeants Major of the Army A Virtual Cemetery created by: Robert Fowler
Description: The Chief of Staff, Army, created the position in 1966, after asking leaders of the major commands for a personal recommendation. He asked that it not be considered a near retirement type assignment. The Sergeant Major of the Army and the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the JCS Chairman are the only members of the United States armed forces below the rank of brigadier general/rear admiral, lower half to be authorized a positional color (flag). I was privileged to be the records custodian of the US Army Sergeants Major Academy, Classes 2 and 3.
