Sicily - Gela temporary cemetery

The temporary American cemetery GELA in Sicily was opened shortly after the invasion of the island. D-Day for operation Husky was set for 10 July 1943. Preceding the amphibious landings, paratroopers from the 505th Regimental Combat Team, reinforced by 3rd Battalion 504th was dropped from 226 C-47 type transport planes. Over 1,200 young American men and women were buried in this cemetery between 20 July 1943 and July 1944. In 1947 all were exhumed and reburied in the Mount Soprano/Paestum cemetery on the Italian mainland. From there the remains were either repatriated or buried in one of the cemeteries in Europe. These cemeteries are operated by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Gela was one of the four temporary cemeteries; the other three were at Licata, Palermo and Caronia.
