18th South Carolina Volunteers, Company G "The Mountain Guards"

Assembled during the winter of 1861-1862. Served in the Dept of SC, GA, and FL, then ordered to VA. It fought at 2nd Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg, moved to NC, & Jackson, MS. Returning to SC, it was involved in the operations around Charleston. During the spring of 1864 the unit was sent back to VA where it participated in the Petersburg siege and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 49% of the 230 engaged at 2nd Manassas and had 3 killed and 39 wounded during the MD Campaign. In September, 1863, there were 363 present for duty and at the Petersburg mine explosion, 205 were disabled. It sustained many casualties at Sayler's Creek and surrendered 16 officers and 139 men. - Crute
